Carbon molecular sieving (CMS) membranes with enhanced separation performance were prepared from polyimide incorporated with attapulgite (ATP). The membranes were characterized by thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The effect of ATP content on the structure and property of CMS membranes was investigated. The results show that the ATP addition can improve the thermal stability of precursor membranes, and the average pore size, graphitization degree and gas separation performance of as-obtained CMS membranes. In particular, ATP exhibits a good compatibility with the matrix of CMS membranes. The incorporation of ATP significantly elevates the gas permeability of CMS membranes by 2–3 times.
