Unsaturated polyester resins have been widely used due to their suitable performance, superior processability, and low cost, while they are produced from nonrenewable fossil resources and have a strong styrene odor. In the past few years, rapid development in alternatives from renewable bioresources has been witnessed. In this chapter, research progress in bio-based unsaturated polyesters (UPs) as well as bio-based reactive diluents are summarized. These bio-based UPs were classified into four types based on the main bioresource used, namely itaconic acid, isosorbide, furan compounds, and vegetable oils. Other bio-based chemicals for UPs were also mentioned during the introduction to these four types. An introduction to the raw materials, synthetic routes, properties, and some applications of these bio-based UPs are given. The development of bio-based diluents is discussed as well. Finally, conclusions and perspectives are highlighted.
