Abstract:
Lipoic acid (LA) is a versatile antioxidant to be used in various oxidation-reducing diseases over the past 70 years. Attributing to the large five-membered ring tension, the dynamic disulfide bond of LA is highly active so that poly(lipoic acid) (PLA) is prone to obtain via ring-opening polymerization (ROP). Herein, we firstly summarized the disulfide-mediated ROP polymerization strategies, providing basic routes for designing and preparing PLA-based materials. PLA possesses dynamic disulfide bonds, universal non-covalent carboxyl groups, which is also biological sourcing, low toxicity, and facile modification. From this, we also shed light on the biomedical applications of PLA-based materials according to the biological and structural features, and further divided recent works into six fields, including antibacterial, anti-inflammation, anticancer, adhesive, flexible electronics, and 3D-printed tissue scaffolds. Finally, the challenges and future prospects associated with the biomedical application of PLA are discussed.
