A novel surfactant-encapsulated terbium-substituted heteropolyoxotungstate complex [L1]₁₃[Tb(SiW₁₁O₃₉)₂]·30H₂O (SEC-1) bearing mesomorphous groups was successfully prepared by the ionic self-assembling route, exhibiting characteristic thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior.
