This article reports on the fabrication of hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanoparticles grafted with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). HAP nanoparticles were firstly surface-grafted with PMMA via reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and subsequent ATRP allowed additional methyl methacrylate (MMA) grafting. The kinetic studies of reverse ATRP revealed a linear increase of ln([M]0/[M]) with polymerization time. Surface grafting was confirmed by Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectra and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that surface-grafted HAP could be dispersed in organic solvent more uniformly than HAP nanoparticles. As the amount of grafted PMMA increased, the dispersibility of surface-grafted HAP was significantly improved. Compared with PMMA/HAP mixture, the composites of PMMA and surface-grafted HAP showed enhanced compressive strength.
