Interest of flexible transparent conducting films (TCFs) has been growing recently due to a rapid demand for electrodes incorporated in flexible or wearable displays in the future. The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with robust properties are capable of forming naturally robust random networks in the film and provide low sheet resistance and high transmittance. The material dependence on CNTs, dispersion, film fabrication, and the post-treatment to improve the performance of TCFs will be discussed in this work.Different types of carbon nanotubes have been used to investigate the material dependence on the optimal film performance of flexible transparent conducting films. We found that the metallicity of single-walled CNTs and the degree of dispersion are the most crucial factors in determining the film performance. The SWCNT TCF conductivity was enhanced by a factor of ~4 by acid treatment (Fig. 1). The films were then further treated with thionyl chloride to improve their conductivity. The low sheet resistance can meet the criteria of TCFs that may replace the conventional ITO with high flexibility for touch screen (TS) and flat panel displays (FPD) and also can be used in many fields such as solar cell, super capacitor, E-paper, thin film transistor, organic lighting emitting diode(OLED), etc.
