In summary, 100–500-nm-long MCNTs with an ionic liquidlike behavior and an excellent thermal stability were obtained. An approximately 6.5-nm-thick shell model with an ionic, perpendicular bilayer structure on the CNT surface was verified. This finding will offer a new practical method to process “solid CNTs” or polymer–CNT composites, such as macromolecules, colloids, or even solutions. In addition, the processability can be improved by cutting MCNTs into shorter nanotubes and enhancing the organic content of the derivatives. Our further studies will focus on the fluidity mechanism supported by the ionic bilayer around the CNTs and the processability values for MCNT-IL–polymer composites.
