This paper describes the preparation of hybrid materials of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) coated amino-terminated polystyrene (PS-NH2) microspheres by seed-mediated growth technique, and their application in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In our approaches, monodisperse PS microspheres are firstly prepared using dispersion polymerization with a subsequent nitration and amination to achieve amino-terminated PS microspheres. The gold colloidal NPs are then tethered on PS-NH2 microspheres and serve as the nucleation sites for the growth of a complete and highly rough gold or silver nano shell layer. The size and morphology of these metallic NPs and their coverage on PS-NH2 microspheres could be tailored by altering the condition of growth solution. The SERS properties of the as-prepared PS core/metallic nano shell particles were finally investigated by using 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as probe molecules, which exhibited excellent enhancement ability.
