With the development of shape memory polymers, temporary shapes created by simple manual deformation could not meet many practical applications. Here, a novel controllable self-driven hydrogel with shape memory effect is presented. Through constructing an anisotropic poly(acrylic acid)-polyacrylamide (PAAc-PAAm) structure, the obtained hydrogel exhibits stable self-driven behavior in response to external pH trigger, and the shape deformed automatically could be fixed by the coordination between carboxylic groups and Fe3+, therefore, the integration of self-driven and shape memory behaviors could be realized in one system. Moreover, the driving force and memorizing force could be tuned by adjusting the concentration of corresponding ions, leading to programmable shape memory and shape recovery processes.
