This paper presents an experimental framework aiming at identifying the origin of weak ambiguous vibrational modes in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), i.e. from the high-order effect or symmetry change using 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT) as probing molecules. The experimental result indicated the appearance of the weak ambiguous vibrational modes was caused by symmetry change rather than high-order effect. Our experimental method can feasibly be extended to a broad range of targets, for example similar systems excited by lasers with different wavelengths or microelectronic junctions bridged by organic molecules.
