Synthesis and Curing of a Novel Combined Liquid Crystalline Epoxy

A novel combined liquid crystalline epoxy containing biphenyl and aromatic ester-type group,diglycidyl ether of 4,4′-bis(4-hydroxybenzoyloxy)-3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbiphenyl (DGE- BHBTMBP), was synthesized. Its spectroscopic structure and thermal properties were investigated with NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). Two curing agents, diaminodiphenylsulfon (DDS) and bis(aminephenoxylphenyl) sulfone (BAPS), were chosen to investigate the curing behavior of epoxy/aromatic diamine by means of nonisothermal DSC. The curing results with these two curing agents show that BAPS is the more appropriate curing agent than DDS.
