- Bleach activators for H2O2 are helpful to notably lowering temperature for cotton bleaching. However, eco-friendly bleach activators are greatly needed, since their biodegradable and non-toxic properties are always ignored. Starch is a renewable resources and known for its eco-friendly merits (e.g., biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and biodegradability). Herein, a series of acetylated cationic starch (AGS) were first synthesized and their related bleaching performance and mechanism were also systematically investigated. Specifically, the synthesis involves preparing cationic starch (GS) through the reaction of 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (GTA) with starch, followed by acetylation to yield AGS. The impact of AGS on the H2O2 bleaching system was studied by CIE whiteness index (WI), H2O2 decomposition rate, wettabilityand bursting strength, showing that the introduction of AGS led to a significant enhancement for WI at 50 °C and near-neutral conditions. In addition, the bleaching mechanism of the H2O2/AGS system was further explored by analyzing the presence of bleaching species, such as hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen and peroxyacetic acid (PAA). Importantly, energy consumption, water consumption and biotoxicity of the H2O2/AGS system were calculated to demonstrate its eco-friendly characteristics. This research would significantly broaden the variety of bleach activators available for eco-friendly cotton bleaching.
